The early part of the tour focuses on Mayan religion, archaeology (specifically the stepped Pyramids), the Mayan ruins at Caracol and the Maya carvings on the ancient temples. Although there is an all weather road that provides good access, the temples are located deep in the rainforest and are not often visited by tourists.

- KS 5: View the Mayan temples and handle primary sources.
- KS 5: Relate Archaeology to Maya religion.
- KS 5: Study past Mayan societies by visiting the sites and learning about the past archaeological and excavation methods.
