Belize tour : Classical Studies & Archaeology

[Key Stage 5 - A Level]

The early part of the tour focuses on Mayan religion, archaeology (specifically the stepped Pyramids), the Mayan ruins at Caracol and the Maya carvings on the ancient temples. Although there is an all weather road that provides good access, the temples are located deep in the rainforest and are not often visited by tourists. 

Subject Focus:

  • KS 5: Visit the Mayan temples and learn about the history behind how they were discovered.
  • KS 5: View the Mayan temples and handle primary sources.
  • KS 5: Relate Archaeology to Maya religion.
  • KS 5: Study past Mayan societies by visiting the sites and learning about the past archaeological and excavation methods.

Student Outcomes:

  • Students will understand the diversity of Belize's natural environment and important conservation issues facing the country.
  • Develop an understanding of Mayan Ancient history through archaeological study.
  • Experience local communities and engage with students from local schools.
  • Learn to respect different national, religious and ethnic identities.
  • Develop life skills through leadership, teamwork, goal setting, money management and taking on responsibilities.
