Himalayas and Chitwan : Citizenship & Learning Skills

[Key Stage 5 - A Level]

When trekking through the Shivapuri Hills students will be able to engage with members of the local community in order to learn about the Nepalese way of life and local customs. A visit to Chitwan National Park allows students to experience the rich diversity of the natural setting.

Subject Focus:

  • KS 5: Learn about the conservation work carried out by the Chitwan National Park.
  • KS 5: Experience the rural Nepalese way of life by engaging with community members and learning about their cultures and customs.
  • KS 5: Visit the Tibetan refugee centre and learn why this centre exists.
  • KS 5: Visit a volunteer organisation that works with local schools and communities.

Student Outcomes:

  • Explore the Kathmandu valley on a 4 day trek and experience the Nepalese rural communities and natural landscapes.
  • See endangered species such as: rhino, tiger, leopard, elephant, buffalo, sloth bear, rhesus monkeys and fresh water crocodiles.
  • Develop life skills in team work and leadership whilst trekking.
  • Learn how Hindus and Buddhists share the same place of worship at the Swayambunath Temple in Kathmandu.
