New York: Citizenship & Learning Skills

[Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4]

New York has become the city it is today through a long and varied history of immigration and acceptance - the best example of the "Melting Pot". It is also home to the UN, making New York the global city where the nations of the world come to meet to try and find ways of living together.

Subject Focus:

  • KS 3-4: Students can study interdependency, the maintenance of peaceful international relations and globalisation.
  • KS 3-4: Students can see the ‘melting pot' of the US and find out how the US accepts and welcomes immigrants.
  • KS 3-4: How does America deal with a past that is still deeply symbolic in contemporary society?

Student Outcomes:

  • An understanding of the efforts made by nations for peace.
  • A chance to see how groups of people come to terms with traumatic historical events.
  • Learn about a country's shifting identity and nature of citizenship.
  • Observe racial harmony, diversity and acceptance of others.

Question: Who said: 'The Constitution is the guide which I never will abandon.'?

Answer: George Washington
