With its Aeolian Islands, live volcano, deep gorges, rich soil and exotic flora and fauna, Sicily is a fascinating destination for any geography school trip. The island is enriched by the remains of ancient civilisations whilst the local people are extremely friendly and welcoming.

Subject Focus:

  • KS 4-5: Explore Mount Etna with one of the English speaking guides from the Alpine Club of Sicily.
  • KS 4-5: Study the impact of volcanic eruptions, farming, climate, riverbeds and soil erosion.
  • KS 4-5: Appreciate the connection between ancient communities and their choice of location.

Student Outcomes:

  • An opportunity for students to study a still active volcano by actually walking up it.
  • Find the correlation between communities and why they choose to live amongst such aggressive landscapes.
  • Undertake field research within a spectacular setting.
  • Evaluate the affects of tourism on the local community and the landscape.
