Walking Tour

Students can compare and contrast the sights they see in St Petersburg with the rest of Russia; why not take time to reflect on what motivated Peter the Great to move his capital here.

Winter Palace

Immortalised in Eisenstein's October, a visit to the home of the Tsar can reflect not only on the importance of this building in Russia's history, but also on how events here have been represented or misrepresented in history.

Cathedral/Fortress of Peter and Paul

This complex contains the cathedral that served as St Petersburg's symbol for centuries and also the prison that held many prominent Bolsheviks captive. Students can use both sites to compare the similarities and differences between the regimes and also explore the importance of religion to the Tsars.

Aurora

The ship whose shots were said to be the signal for the October Revolution, visiting students can explore the events of the Revolution, one of the most significant events of the twentieth century.

Further highlights

  • Art & Art History
    • Hermitage

The Hermitage Museum holds the Guinness World Record for the largest number of paintings - over 3 million in all, spanning the Italian Renaissance masters to Picasso, Matisse and other trailblazers of twentieth-century art. The range of incredible art available for students to see, appreciate and understand is almost without compare.

    • Museum of Applied Arts

A hidden treasure, but nonetheless worthwhile. The collection of porcelain, ceramics, furniture and glassware from around the world shows students how the challenge of integrating art and function has been tackled throughout time.

    • Russian Academy of Arts

Showcasing sculpture and painting from Russia and elsewhere, this fine arts collection is regularly bolstered by travelling exhibitions with innovative themes. The exhibition of students of the Academy gives visitors a chance to understand how other artists are responding to the challenges set by the past.

Very successful. Good variety of trips and visits. Our guide was exceptional, not just in her local knowledge, but in the way she related to our students.
