As well as visiting the bustling market town of Timbuktu and the ancient mosques, tombs and artefacts of this great trading area of Africa, students will spend time with orphaned children and teach English. A magnificent culture enriched programme that invites students to engage with the local community.

Subject Focus:

  • KS 5: Understanding the importance of trade.
  • KS 5: Working with a local primary school and helping to teach English to primary school students.
  • KS 5: Visit sites of religious and historical significance.

Student Outcomes:

  • Learn about the 14th century gold-salt trade that made Timbuktu a trading focal point.
  • Understand the mix of cultures such as North African merchants and the settlement of Muslim scholars.
  • Ride a camel into the Sahara and engage with a traditional Tuareg community.
  • Engage with the local community by teaching English to orphans and underprivileged children.
  • Visit rare cultural sites of major historical significance.
