In Flanders Field
The situation in Ypres, and in the surrounding areas, is introduced at this museum. A visit here will help students understand the military motivations that lay behind the massive loss of life that took place. Students can then see the effect of these decisions on individual lives.
Tyne Cot Cemetery
largest British cemetery in Belgium, students are brought face-to-face with the effects of the war, giving them a sense of the scale of death and stimulating them to think about the effects of the war on those left behind.
Yorkshire Trench
This reconstructed trench gives students an impression of the trench experience for British soldiers. By seeing the conditions in which soldiers had to live, students can begin to appreciate the hardships and trauma of war and the effects on the men and women that experienced it.
Langemark Cemetery
The site of the graves of over 44,000 German soldiers, this site brings balance to students' understanding of World War I as they begin to appreciate the reality of suffering and trauma experienced on both sides.
Menin Gate
This monument, dedicated to the missing and dead British and Commonwealth soldiers, is the scene of the Last Post in memory of the dead. The Menin Gate is a perfect opportunity for students to reflect on how present generations commemorate and understand events of the past.
