Strange but beautiful

A fashion tradeshow first labelled by critics as ‘strange’ and ‘weird’? Maybe there’s nothing new with this description when it comes to the fashion world where these two adjectives are loosely translated to ‘ground-breaking’ and ‘appealing’. From the first Bread & Butter tradeshow held in the Dreieckige Rundbau, Cologne, the fashion industry has seen this exhibition grow and grow. With this growth the show has had to look for new locations and new cities in which to take place and call home. Berlin became an almost unusual option from a fashion point of view. However, this somewhat unconventional choice for kindling in this burning desire to be one of fashion’s biggest tradeshows has become a roaring success leading to a 3-series programme for 2015 – Barcelona; Berlin; Seoul.

Around 500 brands appear at the Bread & Butter events with students able to explore the materials, discuss designs and learn more about the inspiration behind the collections. A huge range of brands specialising in various areas from ‘Young Fashion’ to ‘Superior Women’ and ‘Denim & Contemporary Urban Wear’ to ‘Accessories & Gadgets’, providing fashion students with an array of design pieces to see. Whether you want to explore the latest developments of Nike and links with CR7 (Cristiano Ronaldo) or study the collection of shoes, boots and bags from Ludwig Reiter and Kawasaki Shoes, Bread & Butter brings together the biggest names, newest breakthrough brands and contemporary designers under one roof to exhibit the latest innovations in contemporary design.

From 2005’s appearance at Berlin’s Siemens Kabelwerk in Berlin-Spandau, the need for space has seen Bread & Butter take over the historical airport of Berlin-Tempelhof. Standing as one of the world’s most famous monuments, the commanding scale of the site is almost as dominating as the brands that appear. The options for 2015 mean students will not only have a choice of dates but destinations that offer up inspiration in opposite but equally artistic ways.

Touch down in Barcelona

Fira de Barcelona will again be the setting for Bread & Butter Barcelona. Held on the 8th-10th January 2015, the tradeshow takes up a fantastic position at the foot of Palau Nacional. This famous site by Montjuic is home to the Catalan National Art Museum providing students with the perfect opportunity to dive into the history of art in Catalonia and how its past has led to a thriving charismatic city as it stands today.

It’s not just the 20°C temperature that attracts the stylish minds from around the world to congregate in Barcelona but the vibrant and colourful setting the Catalan city has to offer. Often art and history go hand in hand as does art and new technology. Barcelona has long seen this mix between the rustic Spanish Renaissance style and surreal futuristic taste with the abstracts of Joan Miró to the classic architecture of many buildings within the city acting as clear examples. Bread & Butter Barcelona has become a second home for the B&B family and is once again eagerly anticipated to provide the fireworks for fashion in 2015.

Wir sind ein Berliner

The fantastic setting at Berlin-Templehof continues to be the spiritual home for the Bread & Butter tradeshow. Due to take place early July, the Berlin edition of Bread & Butter may not be immediately comparable with the climate of Spain but the artistic buzz around the city’s inhabitants with a focus on individual style and Boho-chic certainly brings all the colour associated with summer to the German capital.

Berlin has long been a favourite destination for student tours with a focus on the various landmarks and museums documenting notable events in the nation’s early and modern eras. From remnants of the Berlin Wall to the bustling modern centre of Potsdamer Platz, students can take inspiration from a wholly cosmopolitan environment. The style given to standout modern landmarks transcend into the world of fashion as seen by the collections of Rich & Royal whose colours can appear to correlate with the beige of bricks or the teal of Berlin’s River Spree and the River Seine in Paris. The elite style given by Eduard Dressler similarly appear designed to the city slickers. Bread & Butter Berlin has ultimately become the place to be and for brands to be seen. With a host of exhibits and endless networking opportunities, the Bread & Butter events for 2015 will be a fantastic insight into the world of top designers and brands.

Reflecting on a year of Carnival

Looking back at 2014, Bread & Butter Berlin took inspiration from the 2014 World Cup in Brazil to produce Carnaval Do Brasil. Reinforcing the B&B motto of ‘always the sun’, the Berlin-Tempelhof was transformed into a feast of bright colours, party music and carnival atmosphere. A huge turnout from the ‘Bread & Butter Community’ made the event all the more special bringing vibrancy to a grand setting. The success of the 2014 Bread & Butter Berlin tradeshow was also down to the hundreds of brands that turned out with their collections and designs. Visitors were provided with an opportunity to get up close with design pieces and ‘have-a-go’ sessions looking at production processes making the Berlin edition all the more popular. A must-see experience for fashion and textiles students, Bread & Butter alone has never looked more appealing.
