• Students will learn a great deal during their time spent in South Africa. Whether they are following the compelling presentations from local experts or actively helping young children in the townships, this is a great chance for a student studying citizenship to learn more about their subject.

    Subject Focus:
    • KS 4-5: A local community expert will talk to students about the challenges facing the local townships and the difficulties encountered by under privileged South African children.
    • KS 4-5: Taking children from the townships rock pooling and to the Kommetjie Lighthouse.
    • KS 4-5: Working with the communities on the local townships, painting local schools and community centres.
    • KS 4-5: Learn how the rights and freedoms have been won in South Africa.
    • KS 4-5: Receive a presentation about the HIV and Aids Epidemic in South Africa.

    Student Outcomes:
    • Engage with the topic of apartheid, study the legacy of colonial rule and learn of the challenges that face South Africa.
    • Understand the privilege of global citizenship and help engage with township communities.
    • Learn how to surf in the Indian Ocean.
    • Visit the local nature reserves and see the baboons and penguins.
    • Enjoy a traditional Braii (BBQ) and experience authentic live South African Music.

  • Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront

This will provide a great opportunity to relax and explore the colourful city's local shops and cafes.

  • Educational Talk and Discussions

Students will receive a talk about South African life and the challenges facing the South African community. There will be a further educational talk about the HIV/Aids epidemic in South Africa - a major challenge for the country. Students will have the opportunity to ask any questions and relate what they have learned to their citizenship coursework.

  • Community Projects

Two days will be spent in the townships helping to brighten the future for local South Africans. Activities include painting local schools and community centres and helping out wherever needed.

  • Helping local children

Students will be encouraged to interact with local children by taking them to the rock pools and lighthouse at Kommetjie. There will also be a chance for your students take the children from the surrounding townships for a day out at the Camp Parmalat assault course.
