• Rome is at the heart of one of the most important Empires in the Mediterranean world, the remains of which are on display throughout the city. Students can walk through the Forum, where the great orators spoke, and see the temples, baths and circuses which will create a better understanding of their place in Roman culture.

    Subject Focus:
    • KS 4-5: Study the architecture and remains of Rome to see what can be reconstructed and understood from these buildings.
    • KS 4-5: See the city that created some of the great poets and writers of Roman literature and discover what provided their inspiration.
    • KS 4-5: Develop familiarity with archaeological sites and sculptures specified in OCR/AQA syllabuses.

    • See the places relevant to students' studies, providing a better understanding of context, for example: the life and career of Cicero.
    • Assess the societal and technological changes that took place throughout Roman history.
    • Evaluate the continuing influence of themes and ideas found in Roman history and society today.
     

  • The Vatican

    The centre of the Roman Catholic Church, one of the most important religious institutions and influences for the past 2,000 years. Students can understand how the Vatican gained its position and explore its contemporary importance and meaning. Housed in the richly decorated galleries and apartments of the Vatican Palace, the Vatican Museums boast the largest collection of classical sculpture in the world. Inside you will find an enormous collection of art through the centuries of history, from Egyptian pieces to Etruscan ruins to Renaissance paintings and, of course, the legendary Sistine Chapel. 

  • Baths of Caracalla

    South of the Forum this huge site could at one time take over 1,600 bathers and now has much of interest for anybody studying Imperial Rome.

  • Palatine Hill

    This is where Rome began when Romulus killed Remus back in 735 BC. The hill overlooking the Roman Forum is home to a number of palaces dating from the 1st century AD. The Palatine Hill was the best real estate in ancient Rome and it's still one of the best locations today.

  • The Spanish Steps

    Reflect on Rome’s ancient heritage from the top of the longest and widest staircase in Europe. From the Piazza di Spagna, right up to the Trinita dei Monti church, these steps are steeped in the history of one of the world’s most fascinating civilisations.

  • The Catacombs

    Explore over 40 underground burial chambers tucked beneath the Eternal City, on a guided tour of Rome’s Catacombs. An eerie experience for even the bravest of hearts, your students will gain a fascinating insight into the city’s history by exploring what lies beneath its streets.

  • Tivoli

    Take in the spectacular vistas of the surrounding low-lying Lazio region, on an educational excursion to Tivoli. The perfect base for visiting the famed falls of the Aniene River – passing by Roman villas, ruined temples and imposing fortresses – Tivoli is a fantastic stop on any classics educational tour to Rome.

  • Time Elevator

  • Ostia Antica

  • Pantheon

    One of the best-preserved Roman buildings in the world, the Pantheon has been used as a Catholic Church since  the 7th century AD.   • Colosseum

    This magnificent structure represents, not only a stunning example of Roman architecture, it also allows your students to better understand the importance of the spectacle in Roman society.
