• Noordwijk-Binnen is a typical Dutch seaside resort and the wide sandy beaches give way to agricultural fields. The surrounding area has long been an important part of the regional bulb flower industry and sand dunes have been transformed into fields for the cultivation of bulb flowers. This is a great opportunity for students to study how the physical geography of a region can effect the local economy.

    Subject Focus:
    • KS: 3-5 Reclaimed land.
    • KS: 3-5 The impact of tourism.
    • KS: 3-5 Man-made sea defences and natural power resources.
    • KS: 3-5 Farming techniques and mass production methods.

    Student Outcomes:
    • Develop relevant fieldwork and geographical enquiry skills.
    • Study a range of geographical phenomena first-hand, both man-made and natural.
    • Understand the affects of environment on lifestyles and vice versa.
    • Broaden students' out-of-classroom geographical experiences.
    • Examine the relationship between agriculture and tourism.

  • Zaanse Schans

Zaanse Schans is a traditional Dutch neighbourhood with a series of well-preserved wooden house and windmills. Thanks, in part, to the picturesque landscape and array of windmills this is a very popular area for tourists. Geography groups can study the impacts of tourism on the area as well as finding out more about farming techniques.

  • Keukenhof & Voorhout Bulbfields

The fields surrounding Noordwijk are awash with row upon row of tulips and between March to May and August to September it is possible to witness a spectacular display of multi-coloured flowers. These huge drifts of colour are the main industry of the area as the tulips are distributed all over Holland and throughout the rest of Europe. Geography groups will be able to study the effects of such an industry on the local community and why the tulip is incredibly important to the people of Noordwijk.

  • Zeeland

Large parts of Zeeland (Sea land) have been reclaimed from the sea but still remain under threat from flooding. Due to these low-lands, as in other parts of Holland, being below sea-level there are a series of defences including dikes and pumps that are used as protection. Geography groups will come face to face with man-made structures and techniques used to harness the forces of nature. A visit to the islands of Zeeland will provide an interesting case study in reclaimed land and the process of protecting low-lands from flooding.
