  • Cyclops Riviera

The traditional fishing villages of the eastern coast of Sicily attract both tourists and locals thanks to the views of the Ionian Sea, the beautifully painted fishing boats and the small shops selling ice-cream and souvenirs. The 9 mile stretch of coastline has been designated a marine reserve and it is possible to explore the marine biodiversity by diving and snorkelling above the solidified lava that remains under the sea.

  • Alcantara River

When Mount Etna erupted several thousand years ago the river Alcantra was blocked by a lava flow. As the lava cooled it became crystallised by the water and over the next millennia the river naturally eroded a channel resulting in impressive gorges and ravines. Today, the stunning basalt formations provide perfect examples of Etna's geological influence and the surrounding area is rich in nutrients and covered in luscious green woodland.

  • Vulcano Island

The island is made from four overlapping volcanic centres including one of only four active non-submarine volcanoes in Italy and the formerly separate islet of Vulanello. The tourist trade is brisk but not as constant as some of the other Aeolian Islands and you'll find many small shops selling art work and souvenirs made from lava stone.

  • Lipari Island

The largest of the Aeolian Islands lies off the north coast of Sicily in the Tyrrhenian Sea. It has a permanent population of 11,000 but during the summer season this can rise to up to 20,000! Lipari is part of a volcanic archipelago that can be found between Vesuvius on the mainland and Mt. Etna. Hydrothermal activity and pumice are found throughout the island and the later is mined and exported throughout the world.

  • Mount Etna

This is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is known as a stratovolcano due to its conical shape made up of many layers of hardened lava and ash. There are many treks and routes to the top of the crater where you can study the geology and surrounding area. The fertile volcanic soil supports extensive agriculture with vineyards and orchards spreading across the lower slopes.

  • Giardini Naxos area

Giardini Naxos is a quiet fishing port has become particularly popular with tourists thanks to its coves, beaches and views of the bay. The beautiful hillside town of Taormina is situated above Giardini and is also popular with tourists wishing to see the ancient Greek theatre that is one of the most celebrated ruins in Sicily.
