• Our 10 day South African "Garden Route" tour offers school groups the opportunity to explore the real South Africa. It's history has traditionally been one of confrontation but more recently one of reconciliation. Since 1994, a number of world-class sites have been established to commemorate the country's past and celebrate its new unity, while the number and quality of cultural villages, community and township tours has grown dramatically. The country's wildlife is also far more varied than just the celebrated "Big Five" and is supported by an extraordinary biological diversity.

    Subject Focus:
    • KS 3-5 The biodiversity of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans
    • KS 3-5 Peninsulas, points and coastal erosion
    • KS 3-5 Vineyards, cattle farming and sustainability
    • KS 3-5 Waterfalls, streams and rivers
    • KS 3-5 National parks, tourism and local community projects
    • KS 3-5 Case study: The vegetation and wildlife of South Africa's Western Cape region

    Student Outcomes:
    • Ideal tour for KS 3, 4 & 5.
    • Tour highlights include:
    • Cape Town Waterfront and Table Mountain cable car
    • Cape Point and the Boulders penguin colony
    • Oudtshoorn and ostrich farm
    • Cango caves and Knysna Lagoon
    • Tsitskamma rainforest canopy tour
    • Addo Elephant National Park

  • Cheetah Outreach Programme

The cheetah conservation programme at Spier was launched in 1997 with just 2 cheetahs and one hectare of land. Today the centre is an educational hub that hand rears cubs and is home to seven adult cheetahs. Curriculum-linked school presentations and resources are available to help pupils understand the significance of preserving endangered species.

  • Tsitsikamma National Park

The rivers, forests and valleys of Tsitsikamma National Park present an excellent opportunity to study the flora and fauna of the Southern Cape. A canopy walk consists of 10 platforms and 10 slides that are situated 30 metres above the forest floor. Most platforms are located in giant Outeniqua Yellowwood trees and professional guides are on-hand to explain all aspects of the forest's ecology.

  • Boulders Beach

Thanks, in part, to a reduction in commercial pelagic fishing in False Bay a colony of African penguins now live on Boulders Beach. Boardwalks will take you over the sand dunes and vegetation to where you can view the 3000 strong group as they swim, feed and preen themselves in the sunshine.

  • Two Oceans Aquarium

This huge aquarium provides an enjoyable and worthwhile excursion and will help pupils compare and contrast the marine biology of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. The centre is home to over 3000 sea creatures including: sharks, turtles and penguins. There are educational packages for school groups and sustainability and conservation projects are covered in depth.

  • Cape Peninsula

At the south westerly tip of the African continent you'll find the Cape Peninsula which is 47 miles of jagged rock featuring: the Cape of Good Hope to the south and Cape Town and Table Mountain to the north. The peninsula was once an island but over time more land emerged from the sea and today many of the suburbs of Cape Town are situated on the large plain of the Cape Flats, which joins the peninsula to the mainland.

  • Slangkop Nature Reserve

This is a reserve which promotes conservation of the wildlife of South Africa. Students can learn about the native creatures and see penguins and seals in their natural environment. There will also be lots of interesting presentations about wildlife and conservation including a talk by Chris Fallows, one of the world's leading shark experts.

  • Table Mountain

Your group can climb (or catch the cable car) to the top of the iconic Table Mountain where you will be rewarded with commanding views over Cape Town and the meeting of the oceans.
