• More "European" in its culture and outlook than most other parts of the USA, our 8 or 9 day study tours include visits to the major conurbations of San Francisco, Los Angeles and Las Vegas but also some of the world's most awesome natural landscapes of Yosemite, Death Valley, Zion National Park and the magnificent Grand Canyon. Particularly relevant for geography students but also for tourism, business studies and many other subject disciplines, this multi-centre tour provides a rewarding and enriching experience.

    Subject Focus:
    • KS 3-5 Plate tectonics, faults and earthquakes
    • KS 3-5 Managing tectonic hazards
    • KS 3-5 Indicator species and desert landscapes
    • KS 3-5 Canyons, valleys and meandering rivers
    • KS 3-5 Case study: Yosemite National Park and contrasting attitudes to tourist management

    Student Outcomes:
    • Find out more about tectonic plates and earthquakes
    • Discover the effect of tourism on west coast communities and the natural environment
    • See the Grand Canyon and California's contrasting landscapes close up
    • Explore some of the world's most famous structures and learn more about west coast history

  • Bryce Canyon

The National Park is situated in the state of Utah, and the main feature, the Canyon, is actually a giant natural amphitheatre created by erosion along the eastern side of the Plateau. Geological structures known as hoodoos scatter the landscape, and are formed by wind, water and ice erosion of the river bed sedimentary rocks.

  • Monument Valley

The Valley is characterised by a cluster of vast sandstone buttes and is visually sensational. The area is part of the Colorado Plateau where the floor is mainly composed from cutler red siltstone and the valley's vivid red colour comes from the iron oxide becoming exposed in the weathered siltstone.

  • The Grand Canyon

The Colorado River has created one of the most well known natural formations in the world, the Grand Canyon. The massive rift in the Colorado Plateau exposes uplifted Proterozoic and Paleozoic strata and is of particular significance to student groups because of the thick sequence of ancient rocks that are beautifully preserved and exposed within its walls.

  • Zion National park

The north fork of the Virgin River cuts through the Navajo sandstone of Zion National Park and in so doing creates the deep and narrow gorge of Zion Canyon. A variety of plants and wildlife inhabit the park's four life zones: desert, riparian, woodland and coniferous forest and students will be enthralled for hours examining this geologically stunning area.

  • The Mojave desert

The Mojave Desert sits within the state of Nevada and although popular for cities such as Las Vegas it remains one of the most fascinating natural landscapes in America. National parks include Death Valley, Joshua Tree and the Mojave National preserve and provide the perfect place to find out more about life in the harsh desert climate.

  • Yosemite national park

Almost 1,200 square miles of the Sierra Nevada has formed the protected parkland of Yosemite for over 120 years. Three of the world's highest waterfalls can be found alongside valleys carved by glaciers, giant sequoias, lakes, meadows and forests of intense beauty and interest to student groups.
