• Cantabria is the richest region in the world in archaeological sites from the Upper Paleolithic period. The first signs of human occupation date from Lower Paleolithic, although this period is not so well represented in the region. The most significant cave painting site is Altamira, dated from about 16.000 to 9.000 BC and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

  • Santander

    This is the largest city on the Cantabrian coast and was traditionally a large commercial fishing port. The cathedral is well worth a visit as is the elegant area of El Sardinero, with a wealth of typical Belle Epoque style buildings. There are also two magnificent sandy beaches.

  • Santillana Del Mar

    A place of pilgrimage for centuries, the monastery houses and the relics of St Juliana. The 13th century Collegiate Church is an outstanding example of Romanesque architecture. Don't forget to try the local cakes aka: the ‘tabletas'.

  • Burgos

    Birthplace of El Cid, whose remains lie in the splendid gothic cathedral, the third largest in Spain, dating from the 13th century. There is also an attractive walled city with an archaeological museum, 15th century palace and the Santa Maria Arch.
