This area is steeped in a rich history from medieval times to World War II. However, it is perhaps most famous for the Battle of the Somme, the first day of which saw nearly 20,000 British deaths. The cemeteries, which stretch into the horizon, are filled with British soldiers. Visiting this area is a powerfully moving experience for students.
