• Thanks to Valkenburg's geographical situation it was constantly threatened by neighbouring countries and the ruins of Valkenburg castle lay testament to a history of seige and conquest. Today, pupils can study the underground system of caves and tunnels built by the Romans and the views from the castle ruins are fantastic.

    Subject Focus:
    • KS: 3-5 Roman structures and public health.
    • KS: 3-5 Seige and conquer.
    • KS: 3-5 WWII resistance movement.
    • KS: 4-5 European citizenship and politics.

    Student Outcomes:
    • Discover why the Romans were such an influential force throughout Europe and how their legacy is still significant today.
    • Understand the people of Holland's participation in WWII and how their actions were vital to the war effort.
    • Find out why Valkenburg is a unique European city and how geographical location influences historical events.
    • Study history through first-hand experiences and relate findings to other contexts.

  • National War and Resistance Museum

Located in the south east of Holland, in the village of Overloon, this museum features a large number of military vehicles and equipment from the Battle of Overloon in WWII.

  • The Catacombs of Plenkertstraat

This series of underground crypts and rooms in Plenkertstraat are a perfect example of early Christian catacombs dating from Roman times. Pupils will really enjoy hearing about the stories and history related to these eerie underground passages.

  • Maastricht

Once a thriving Roman settlement, Maastricht is the oldest fortified city in the Netherlands with city gates and ramparts that are still standing. This is also the home of the provincial government building where, in recent years, several international conferences were held during the Dutch chairmanship of the European Union in 2004. The city fortifications are worthwhile and Maastricht itself is a charming place to study the history of the region.

  • Castle Rock

The tunnels and caves under Valkenburg are the result of 2000 years of excavation dating back to Roman times where the marlstone was mined for building material. Many of the town's buildings were built from the mountain stone and a guided tour in the Gemeentegrot (Municipal Cave) and Fluweelengrot (Velvet Cave) help pupils understand how these underground structures have served the people of Valkenburg throughout history.
