The Château du Molay is a great location for visiting the nearby D-Day Landing beaches, Bayeux and Caen, and has its own wartime history as it was occupied by the Germans during World War II.

Travelbound’s own Château du Molay is the ideal location for a history tour to Normandy. Most of the museums and cemeteries in the area are within a short drive, allowing you to get the most educational value from your trip.

The Bayeux Tapestry, vividly depicting the conquest of England from a Norman point of view, has survived for nearly ten centuries now. Few historical artefacts have been so well-preserved, or continue to generate such interest from students. A highlight of any school trip to Normandy, although having an ice-cream shop nearby can’t hurt!

Normandy saw intense fighting during the liberation of Europe in 1944, having been selected as the landing point for invasion forces as part of Operation Overlord. The 360 Museum in Arromanches depicts an absorbing panorama of the struggle, a film is projected in High Definition on 9 screens and tells the story of the terrible Battle of Normandy thanks to archive images gathered from around the world.

A short walk down the hill is the Musée du Débarquement, where exhibits including salvaged artillery guns, and a detailed model of the harbour floated across the Channel by the Allies will give your students an essential understanding of the scale of the operation. To really bring the point home, a few surviving remnants of the harbour can also be seen from the museum’s window.

Possibly the best excursion to give your students a comprehensive overview of the war, from its origins to the onset of the Cold War, is the Peace Memorial in Caen. A rich trove of retrieved material includes examples of propaganda; photographs of the concentration camps; eye-witness audio accounts and maps of the various conflicts around the world. Allow plenty of time for this visit as its educational value cannot be overstated.

We loved the Château! Our driver was very friendly and accommodating. We enjoyed visiting Paris, the Bayeux Tapestry and Arromanches the most during this trip.
