• For teachers looking for a fun way to teach physics and space science, the Euro Space Centre is a great place to go. An easily accessible venue with a focus on developing students' understanding of space and space exploration; there is even an opportunity for students to undergo astronaut training!

    Subject Focus:
    • KS 3-4: Develop students' understanding of space, stars and planets.
    • KS 3-4: Learn about the effects of gravity and how rockets are designed.
    • KS 3-4: Appreciate the history of space exploration and understand the processes that drive it.

    Student Outcomes:
    • Understand key processes in space science.
    • Participate in scientific processes and experiments.
    • Experience the effects of low gravity and other phenomena.
    • Appreciate the value and drive behind space exploration.

  • Lecture/Discussion - Life in Space

How do astronauts cope with weightlessness and living in space? For example: what are the direct and indirect effects on the immune system? Very natural actions here on Earth are discussed using pictures, video clips and audience interaction.

  • Science Experiments - The Vacuum in Space and Auroras

Climb into the cargo bay of the Space Shuttle for an hour of scientific experiments. Groups will explore the influence of vacuum in space as well as how to create their own aurora with the aid of a vacuum pump.

  • The Clean Room

Don your hairnets, overshoes and white coats before entering the ‘clean room'. Students can find out more about the construction and integration of satellite technology before carrying out tests ready for launching their own satellite.

  • Astronaut training

The Great Training Hall of the Euro Space Center hosts various machines for astronaut training including the moonwalk, rotating chair, weightlessness wall and the multi-axis chair. These machines have trained and enabled a number of astronauts prior to their trips to the moon.

  • Micro-rocket workshop

"Who invented the first rocket? What is the physical principle that allows a rocket to take off? What are the factors that influence a rocket's speed and propulsion? How do you optimise the speed of propulsion, stability, aerodynamicsm and the peak altitude?" All these questions and more are covered within the micro-rocket workshop.

  • Space flight simulation

The commander and pilot are installed in the cockpit while, in the control room, the Flight Director coordinates the team of engineers who together will ensure the smooth progress of the Space Shuttle mission Amicitia. Each member of the team will play a role for a couple of hours to simulate a space flight.

  • Integrating satellites

In this activity students get close up to satellites, in particular the integration of a telecommunications satellite. Students are prepared during a one hour briefing, during which they learn about the first satellites in space, what satellites really are, how they work and how they are integrated.
