• A trip to Iceland provides students with a unique experience far from the constraints of learning in the classroom. In the clean, fresh air students can witness cascading waterfalls, magnificent glaciers, spouting geysers, and breathtaking landscape. This is an ideal destination for students wishing to study lava fields, geothermal processes and scientific research techniques.

    Subject Focus:
    • KS 4-5:  Explore the capabilities and possibilities of geothermal power.
    • KS 4-5:  Study a range of geological, glacial and other physical phenomena.
    • KS 4-5:  Evaluate the impact of tourism.
    • KS 4-5:  Assess how Icelanders have adapted to best use and adapt to their environment.

    Student Outcomes:
    • Develop relevant fieldwork and scientific research techniques.
    • Study an unrivalled range of scientific phenomena close up in a natural environment.
    • Understand the effects of environments on lifestyles and vice versa.
    • Broaden students' out-of-classroom scientific experiences.
    • Examine geothermal power and how it can be harnessed

  • Golden Circle

Throughout the south of Iceland, there are a number of spectacular phenomena to inspire and interest science students. From the Þingvellir plain, where the effects of continental drift can be observed, through the Gullfoss waterfall to the Geysers of the valley of Haukadalur, students can observe, explore and understand a range of glacial and geological features for themselves.

  • Hveragerdi’s Greenhouses

Based on a steaming geo-thermal field, 45kms from Reykjavik, the small agricultural town of Hveragerði is famed for having the largest concentration of commercial greenhouses anywhere in Iceland. A trip here will show your group how natural energy can be harnessed to assist with agricultural production.

  • Hellisheiði Geothermal Power Plant

Situated in Hengill, this power plant is designed to create electricity and hot water by harnessing the geothermal activity of three volcanic systems. The visitor centre provides a guided tour of the plant itself as well as several multi-media presentations.

  • Sólheimajökull Glacier

What better way to study how glaciers shape their environment than walking over the top of one. Professional mountain guides will advise your group on safety and the correct use of crampons and other glacier climbing gear. This is an amazing activity that enables young adventurers to get up close and personal to an ever changing and incredible natural formation.

  • Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon geothermal spa attracts visitors looking to take advantage of the mineral rich water's healing properties. This is the perfect opportunity to relax and study the process of extracting natural, sustainable energy.

  • Geothermal Power Plant

Iceland's new, hot rocks provide an opportunity to generate power in more ways than just burning fossil fuels. Students can see how scientific research has helped to harness these particular features to meet the challenge of sustainability, generating debate for what can be done elsewhere.
