Fondly regarded as a Mecca for art and design tours, Florence is one of the quintessential jewels in Italy's cultural crown. No sooner than you step foot upon the cobbled streets and take your first stroll across the grand piazzas will you realise that art and style is stitched into the fabric of Florence as readily as the River Arno flows under the Ponte Vecchio.

This is where the origins of the Renaissance can be found and from the dome of the Santa Maria del Fiore to the Piazzale Michelangelo, overlooking the city, it's no wonder that art and design student tours to Florence are so extremely popular.

No university tour is complete without taking in the fabled artwork of the Uffizi although, as there are so many fine examples of art, architecture and sculpture, dotted throughout the city you may opt for a more organic walking tour instead. But, of course, you would be missing out and once inside the tapestry-covered hallways and vast-frescoed corridors you'll be left in no doubt that you made the right decision.

Botticelli, Raphael, Caravaggio and Leonardo de Vinci are all in residence and undertaking a guided tour will help your students unearth the history, the drama and the passion that has helped to form one of the world's greatest collections of art.

Away from the Uffizi and across the Arno you'll discover inspiration of a different kind in the form of the Giardini di Boboli which contains lush green lawns, 16th century sculptures and some darn fine views of the city.

Located just behind the former home of the Medicis, the Pitti Palace, the gardens serve as an oasis of peace and tranquillity where students can find their own particular piece of Tuscan hillside to help them reflect as they fuel their imagination.
