• Morocco is a country with a wide and varied geographical landscape and the High Atlas Mountains provide the setting for much of this dramatic variation. From lush valleys to arid desert, Marrakech and the High Atlas Mountains provide an ideal location for geography groups looking for a field trip in a more exotic setting.

  • The Tizi-n-Tichka Pass

Originally built as a military highway, the winding road leads from Marrakech all the way to Ouarzazante and showcases the rugged landscape including methods of farming and the living conditions of the nomadic tribes and permanent locals.

  • Draa River

This is Morocco's longest river that flows for just under 700 miles. It is formed by the confluence of the Dades River and the Iminin River and supplies sustenance to the lush vegetation of the Draa Valley. The inhabitants of the valley use the river to irrigate their palm groves and the classic incisions and meandering process are perfect for geographical case studies.

  • Ouarzazante

The town of Ouarzazante has a population of just fewer than 60,000 and can be found in a bare plateau at 1,160 metres to the south of the High Atlas Mountains. The local area is known for the kasbahs that have been created by the mainly Berber inhabitants and the fortified village of Ait Benhaddou is one of the best-preserved examples in the whole of Morocco. The town and surrounding area have also provided film locations for: Star Wars IV, Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia.

  • The Atlas mountains

Stretching for an estimated 1,500 miles, the Atlas Mountains provide a great example of a folded formation created by tectonic activity. Melt-water-rivers meander through lush valleys meaning that communities can survive within the otherwise harsh landscape. The mountains are also home to many endangered species of wildlife including: bears, lions and gazelle.

  • Menara Gardens

At the gates of the Atlas Mountains, to the west of Marrakech, you'll find the peace and tranquillity of the Menera gardens. An artificial lake is supplied with water via an old hydraulic system which begins in a mountain location approximately 20 miles away in the Atlas foothills. The orchards and olive groves are irrigated with water from the lake and surround the garden and the large pavilion at its centre.

  • Marrakech

As in most North African cities Marrakech is split into two sections: the old fashioned fortified medina and the contemporary commercial centre of Gueliz. Bustling markets (souks), squares and temples are packed full of colourful characters selling, buying and living within the backdrop of the awesome snow-capped High Atlas Mountain range.
