    Trier Christmas Markets

    This year sees Trier celebrate its 34th Christmas market. Amid the medieval surroundings of the Hauptmarkt square, and in front of the mighty cathedral, 95 festively decorated wooden huts offering everything from jewellery to candles, ceramics to handmade arts and crafts. And if all that leaves you feeling hungry, there's a plentiful supply of sweet treats and potato fritters, as well as glühwein and hot tea to wash them down.

    Trier, on the river Moselle, is Germany’s oldest city - founded by Emperor Constantine the Great in the 4th century AD as the capital of the Western Roman Empire. Discover the UNESCO World Heritage Roman monuments, the Imperial baths, the amphitheatre and the Porta Nigra on a guided tour.See the world’s largest collection of Roman coins at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum. The city has impressive medieval buildings including the Cathedral of St. Peter and the Church of Our Lady (both UNESCO World Heritage Sites) and is also notable as the birth place of Karl Marx whose house can be visited.

    One of the prettiest towns of the Moselle Valley, Cochem has a riverside promenade to rival any along the Rhine. Take the chairlift to the Pinnerkreuz for panoramic views or visit the medieval castle.

    Allow: Half day

    Tip: At the tourist office on Endertplatz you can pick up an outline for a walking tour of the town.

    This is a beautiful, historic city is at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle. It boasts ancient bridges and an interesting old town, a large shopping centre, the 13th-century Liebfraukirche and the wine producers' market place. See the magnificent statue of William I, Germany's first emperor at the Deutches Eck or visit Romanticum -the city's newest attraction. Take the cable car to the Ehrenbreitstein fortress towering above the city.
