Students love to meet the goats at the cheese farm and see the age-old production of calvados and cider. The Normandy Caramels sweet factory and a visit to a chocolate-maker are also very popular.

Students will relish the opportunity to explore traditional French production methods on a food technology tour to Normandy. Travelbound are pleased to provide several great options to enhance the experience, including expert cookery lessons in a local restaurant or cookery school. At our own Chateau du Molay groups can enjoy a frogs legs and snails tasting, a cheese board with a selection of local produce and a crepe and cider/apple juice evening.

There is a farmers’ market every day of the week in this region, with those in Bayeux and Caen having a particularly good selection of locally-sourced meat and fish. Market visits provide your students with excellent opportunities to discover and taste foods they may not encounter in the UK, and Travelbound can also offer tailored assignments to help them utilise their language skills and practise their bargaining at the same time!

Typical activities in the area for a Normandy food technology trip are sure to include a visit to a goats’ cheese farm. Every stage of the interesting cheese-making process is explained with visual aids, and students are often able to help out at feeding time.

On a visit to a traditional Normandy boulangerie, students will learn how different types of bread are made, before being encouraged to have a go themselves. Getting hands-on involved is definitely the best way to get a thorough understanding, and also results in a lot of fun and tasty treats to enjoy afterwards.

At the Ferme du Lavour, a delightful organic apple orchard is the idyllic setting for a fascinating discussion on how the best apples are cultivated, before moving down into the distillery, where students will see a demonstration of the processes of making apple juice, cider and calvados. And be sure and top it off with a delicious tasting session.

We provide you with promotional materials to help you get your students excited about their trip.

Our top excursions were Chevrerie, the apple farm and the Bayeux Tapestry. Gordon, our driver, was very accommodating and had a great knowledge of the area which was very helpful!
