Tutors always tell us there are so many museums to inspire their students that it’s hard to fit them all in. Some of the museums offer free entrance to student groups.

France's capital city is awash with iconic structures and world-famous landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame and the Arc de Triomphe, present much more than just passing interest for university art and design students.

This is the city which was once home to Dali, Monet, Mondrian and Picasso with districts like Montmartre providing a bohemian base from where they could ply their trade. These days Montmartre is far too well-off to house up and coming artists however, there's still plenty to see for interested art and design students.

The Espace Dalí museum and le Bateau-Lavoir, as well as some exceptional city views from the Sacré-Cœur Basilica, can all be found on Montmartre and the funicular railway provides a smoother alternative to the 300 steps to the top.

Aside from Montmarte, Paris is home to one of the most acclaimed art galleries on the planet, the Louvre and no trip will be complete without taking in at least a few of the 35,000 separate pieces of artwork.

Further exhibits can be found within the Musée d’Orsay, Musée de l'Orangerie and the Musée Marmottan which could leave you scratching your head as to how to divide your time.

Best advice is to focus upon an era, a style or a particular artist and ensure your art and design students are well-briefed prior to starting their tour. There simply isn't enough time to fit everything in on one visit and with photography, sculpture, textiles and ceramics all requiring their own separate museum, preparing a practical itinerary is certainly the way forward.

From the artists scattered along the banks of the Seine and the Place du Tertre to the undisputed legends whose works are housed in the city's world famous galleries - Paris is an absolute treasure trove that continues to inspire and enthral no matter how many times you visit.
