Why the Château du Molay ticks the boxes for Newport High School’s trip to Normandy

TEACHER Q&A

We recently sat down with Maria Teixeira at Newport High School who has returned to Château du Molay in Normandy with their students for several years. Here’s what she had to say about what makes the experience so memorable, year after year.

Q: What is it about the château that keeps you coming back?

A: For me, it’s the safety of the château. I love that the children can have a bit of independence within the grounds without the teachers constantly on their back. The château refurbishments improvements make it feel renewed and welcoming. Some children may never have a holiday abroad again, so all these things make a difference. Also, if there is something on the itinerary I want to change, Travelbound and the onsite château team are flexible.

Q: What are some of the children’s favourite aspects of the trip?

A: The swimming pool is a huge hit. Even 45 minutes in the water makes a big difference. They love the swimming pool! Plus, the activities with the château staff are great – not just for the kids but for us too, since we’re with them 24/7.

Q: How does staying at the château compare to staying in a hotel?

A: It’s a world apart. At the château, the kids aren’t confined to their rooms – they can be outside, breathing fresh air and moving about. In a Paris hotel, they don’t have freedom. Once we’re there, they have to go to their rooms during downtime. I like the students to see a bit of culture which the château supports with. The outdoor space is invaluable. With checking rooms, managing the early mornings and late nights, having the château team means we have a little bit of extra help.

Q: You also take your students to Paris. How do you balance the itinerary?

A: I like Paris. You know, I want the students to see two things: Paris for the hustle and bustle – EuroDisney, the Eiffel Tower, monuments – and something else like the Mont St Michel, then onto Normandy for the culture, history, and contrasting scenery. The château is a perfect contrast to the city.

Q: What role does the château staff play in your decision to return?

A: They’re brilliant. Francisco, has been there a number of years now and continues to lift the standards. The food is child-friendly, the presentation is good, and the staff are very accommodating. I especially appreciate that the children are served before the staff at meal times – that’s important to me.

Q: How important are onsite activities during downtime?

A: Vital, especially in the evenings. Team-building activities when we arrive are fantastic for helping students bond. It’s nice for us teachers too – we can step back, take photos, and let them enjoy the moment.
