Tourist attractions were also less crowded, making visits much more enjoyable. I would recommend travelling at this time of year. Initially we wanted to go from the 7th of February, but it clashed with a marathon that was happening in Seville at the same time and we struggled to find accommodation.”

“The students particularly enjoyed the paella, the chicken dishes and, unsurprisingly, all the desserts! Catering for a large group of teenagers is never easy, as tastes and preferences vary greatly and many students can be quite fussy with food. However, it was encouraging to see many of them trying traditional Spanish dishes that they hadn’t experienced before. For some, it pushed them slightly out of their comfort zone, and it was lovely to see several students discovering new foods that they genuinely enjoyed.” 

“The walking tour gave students an excellent insight into Seville’s fascinating history, including its Roman and Moorish influences, the significance of the Guadalquivir River, the history behind the Cathedral and Giralda, and how Seville became one of Spain’s most important trading cities during the Age of Exploration. One of the highlights was learning about the history and symbolism of Plaza de España. Our A-level students particularly enjoyed discovering how the square was built for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929 and how its tiled alcoves represent each of Spain’s provinces. They also appreciated learning about its connection to Spain’s wider relationship with the Hispanic world, making it especially relevant to the cultural themes they study in the classroom.” 

“The Alcázar, the Cathedral, the guided walking tour and the flamenco performance all had a huge impact. They allowed students to experience Spanish history, architecture, traditions and music in an authentic setting, bringing topics they had only previously studied in the classroom to life.” 

“The greatest opportunities came during mealtimes, shopping, the visit to Mercado de Triana and the students’ free time in supervised groups. Ordering food, asking questions and interacting with local people gave students genuine reasons to communicate in Spanish, helping to build their confidence.”
